Japanese GP 2009 - Bridgestone Race Day Report

Japanese GP 2009 - Bridgestone Race Day Report

Sebastian Vettel (Red Bull Racing) used a hard – hard – soft tyre strategy to score his third race win of the season after a dominant performance in the Japanese Grand Prix at Suzuka.

Vettel finished over four seconds ahead of Panasonic Toyota Racing driver Jarno Trulli, who used the same tyre strategy, whilst Vodafone McLaren Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton used soft – hard – soft to finish third.

Shoshi Arakawa - Bridgestone Chairman of the Board, President and CEO, says
“Congratulations to Sebastian Vettel for his victory here at the Suzuka Circuit. The Japanese Grand Prix was held at Suzuka in beautiful weather today after a two year interval, and I believe the spectators thoroughly enjoyed the world’s top class battles of Formula One. We are proud that our tyres have helped to provide an impressive and exciting race. Bridgestone, as the Official Tyre Supplier to the FIA Formula One World Championship, will continue to support all of the teams and drivers with our full efforts for the season’s remaining two races.”

Hiroshi Yasukawa – Director of Bridgestone Motorsport, says
“Well done to Sebastian Vettel and Red Bull Racing for keeping the drivers’ championship alive with a thrilling win. Congratulations to Jarno Trulli for scoring Toyota’s second podium finish in as many races and also to the reigning champion Lewis Hamilton for his third place for McLaren. We were privileged to have many Bridgestone guests, staff and board members here to enjoy fantastic racing.”

Hirohide Hamashima - Bridgestone Director of Motorsport Tyre Development, says
“From the beginning of the race the soft tyre worked well, however in the second two thirds of the race it really came alive and we saw very good race performance from this tyre. The high track temperature meant that the hard compound could be used at the start which would not be as advisable on a colder track due to longer warm-up requirements. This was a safe strategy for those concerned by any degradation from the soft, however those who did opt to use the soft at the start saw good performance.”

Japanese GP 2009 - Bridgestone Qualifying Report

Bridgestone’s soft tyre carried Sebastian Vettel (Red Bull Racing) to his fourth pole position of the season for tomorrow’s Japanese Grand Prix at Suzuka.

Vettel set a time of 1min 32.160secs in a qualifying session which was red flagged three times. Panasonic Toyota Racing Driver Jarno Trulli set the fastest time in the morning practice session, also using the soft Bridgestone Potenza.

Q&A with Hirohide Hamashima - Bridgestone Director of Motorsport Tyre Development

What was significant about today’s running?
“Today was a big challenge for all drivers. The weather was dry, meaning that yesterday’s information from a wet track was not much use. This meant that teams only had the one hour of FP3 to accumulate the same data they would usually gain over four hours of practice. The track improved, as we would expect with the first dry running of the weekend, but this made set-up a challenge and we saw an interesting order at the end of FP3. The difficulty continued in qualifying, with two red flag periods in Q2 and one in Q3. It seemed that the older surface of the west track gave less grip for braking which may have caught out some drivers. Sebastian Vettel did well to get pole today and we hope that Timo Glock was not badly hurt in his accident.”

What are the tyre strategy considerations for tomorrow’s race?
“Obviously we do not have as much data as we would have if Friday had been dry, but this is one of the challenges of motor racing. The soft tyre is definitely the quicker tyre, and it does not appear to have too bad degradation levels, meaning that it could be the preferred race tyre. The hard tyre takes longer to warm up than the soft, but we do not have sufficient data to know exactly the lap time difference between the two tyres. That said, I’m sure we will see an exciting race here at Suzuka.”

Vettel Blames Raikkonen For Early Exit

Vettel Blames Raikkonen For Early Exit

Speaking to the BBC after this early exit from the Hungarian GP, Sebastian Vettel laid the blame with Kimi Raikkonen after their contact on lap 1 of the race.

Vettel had to retire from the grand prix on lap 32 with damaged suspension, which he believes was caused by Kimi hitting him as the cars fought for position at the start. Red Bull have confirmed it was front suspension damage that caused the DNF but yet to confirm the cause.

Sebastian Vettel told the BBC: ”We know the reason for my retirement: in the first corner I had contact with Kimi. He hit my front left [wing]; that was also the reason why the pit stop took very long. All of a sudden it was game over and the front-left suspension gave up. The start wasn’t the best but it wasn’t the worst. It doesn’t help when you have cars with Kers and then seven or eight cars competing at the first corner.”

As a championship contender Vettel was obviously disappointed to leave Budapest with no points but concluded that KERS may be on reason for the start being so much closer with more cars fighting for the lead positions thanks to their ‘boost’ button.

Raikkonen (car number 4) was under investigation after the race for this clash with Vettel, but the Race Stewards confirmed that Kimi would face no action as it was just a racing incident.

German GP 2009 - Webber Wins At Last!

German GP 2009 - Webber Wins At Last!

We never did get that dramatic wet race we were promised. It seems yet again that was reserved for the GP2 Sprint Race! We did get however a new addition to the Grand Prix winners list as Mark Webber one the race in dominant form.

After 8 years of trying it wasn’t a surprise to hear his radio transmission after his crossed the line! It was refreshing to hear him so passionate and elated, although a lot of it was probably relief I’m sure.

The biggest surprise wasn’t that he won it but that he managed to cross the line P1 even after being handed a ridiculous driver through penalty by the stewards and without the help of rain. His team were ’stoked’ off course, especially as this was the second 1-2 in a row for Red Bull.

Vettel missed out on that home win his fans wanted so much but he did an awesome job to finish second and still take more points of championship leader Button. Brawn must be pretty worried now as Red Bull can beat them in the wet & dry. The only thing against Red Bull’s title hopes is that they have two very competitive drivers and are doing things fairly by not backing one horse this early on.

Massa and Rosberg had a great race and managed to beat the Brawns to third and fourth place, thanks to a pitstop refuelling error for Rubens and both cars struggling with their tyres towards the later stages of the race. Alonso too was on a charge in the late stages

Another bad day for Hamilton with his race effectively over by lap 1. He kept asking to retire and save the engine & gearbox but McLaren kept him out running last just in case the rain came but it didn’t.

It feels like deja vu writing this review as sadly it was yet another disappointing race result for our Kimster. And yet again another retirement. Kimi had another great start and with the heavier full loads the Ferrari’s were carrying it was looking promising for some solid points.

Unfortunately things went wrong as early as lap 14, when Kimi’s car was damaged by some debris effecting his pace and then this finally ended his race after a lose of  power.

Sadly that wasn’t all of Kimi’s bad luck for this race. It seems that the BBC F1 team are just as keen on bring up the Kimi/Sutil Monaco 08 accident up at every race possible as ITV-F1 were. Now even more so after Raikkonen and Sutil had a coming together as Sutil exited the pits. It was clearly a racing incident, with Adrian blaming himself more than Kimi, yet BBC commentary decided to bash Kimi and had him a ‘penalty’ for Hungary. Luckily the stewards decided not to after reviewing the incident after the GP.

We now look to the Hungarian GP. Its a circuit that should suit the Ferrari’s and Massa has shown they can beat the Brawns. So Kimi will be aiming for a podium. Lets hope lady luck is on his side this time.

German GP 2009 - Bridgestone Race Day Press Release

Red Bull Racing driver Mark Webber scored his first ever F1 race win after he used a two stop, super soft – medium – medium tyre strategy to win a fast-paced German Grand Prix in difficult conditions at Nurburgring.

Despite being given a drive-through penalty for causing an avoidable collision at the start, Webber finished 9.2 seconds ahead of team-mate Sebastian Vettel with Scuderia Ferrari Marlboro driver Felipe Massa taking third. Vettel used a super soft – medium – super soft strategy and Massa used a super soft – super soft - medium strategy for his first podium finish of the season.

Hirohide Hamashima - Bridgestone Director of Motorsport Tyre Development, says
“Congratulations to Mark Webber for taking his first ever Grand Prix win at the 130th attempt. This illustrates the Japanese proverb ‘continuing is the force’ and we are very happy that this win occurred using Bridgestone tyres. From a tyre analysis perspective this was a thrilling race. The conditions, such as temperature and track condition, meant that for most of the race it was very difficult to determine which was the better race tyre. This meant that drivers and strategists had to use a lot of brain power today and we saw a good variety of strategies through the field, even from drivers in the same team.

“The track conditions started very green and this caused some competitors who started on the super soft tyre problems with graining and degradation. Some competitors used the medium compound very well, and Fernando Alonso was notable with his fastest lap on this tyre, however others struggled for grip and temperature with this tyre. This all added to the interest.”

Vettel Claims Youngest Ever Brit GP Win

Vettel Claims Youngest Ever Brit GP Win

So it wasn’t to be for Button or his expecting fans. Yet another Brit falls foul of the home GP jinx. Well not really Vettel went out and won it, with the help of its brilliant new motor! Not only did he win but he took some serious points from Jenson the championship leader, so maybe we will get that title fight after all. Thanks to a 1-2 finish Red Bull have closed the gap in the constructors title too.

Sadly another disappointing weekend for Kimi fans though. After a great Q2 - we all expected more than his final grid position of 9th. The Finn more than made up for that with a fantastic start, really widening the normal track width and almost taking to the run off - he put himself into 5th position after Copse corner.

Sadly it all went downhill from then on as his strategy meant a longer first stop, losing out to Trulli and then being stuck behind the train, with no chance to push. He was then passed during stops by his team mate Massa, Rosberg & Button. Still at least he got a point rather than nothing. The other two Brazilians had a great weekend too - with Piquet and Rubens also out doing their team mates fair and square.

Not the most classic GP but an amazing and dominant win from Vettel, he made it look easy. He spoilt the Brit party, with the majority of the fans leaving Silverstone disappointed. It wasn’t really Sebs fault though, as Button & Lewis could manage no better than 6th and 16th - which had nothing to do with the young German.

The next race in Germany is going to be an interesting one - with more developments for most teams and Button in particular out to ruin Vettel’s home GP win dream. Here’s hoping its a better race for Kimi - its awful to see him fighting for the final point.

British GP 2009 - Bridgestone Race Report

Red Bull Racing driver Sebastian Vettel scored his second race win of the season after he used a two stop, soft – soft – hard tyre strategy to win a fast-paced British Grand Prix in cool and cloudy conditions at Silverstone.
Vettel finished fifteen seconds ahead of team-mate Mark Webber, who used the same strategy. The final podium position went to Brawn GP Formula 1 Team driver Rubens Barrichello, who used a softhard- soft tyre strategy. Bridgestone’s soft tyre proved to be the superior race tyre here for most competitors, giving a faster lap time than the hard, and giving good consistency too.

Hiroshi Yasukawa – Director of Bridgestone Motorsport, says
“Congratulations to Sebastian Vettel for his second race win of the season and Red Bull Racing on their second one-two of the year. Silverstone has a great atmosphere and we have seen a fantastic crowd here throughout the weekend in what is both a very important market for Bridgestone and an important base for our Bridgestone Motorsport operation.”

Hirohide Hamashima - Bridgestone Director of Motorsport Tyre Development, says
“Today we saw very hot pace from the Red Bulls in the cool weather conditions as they used the Bridgestone hard and soft tyre s very well indeed. The best lap times of both Red Bull cars were over half a second faster than anyone else. The soft Bridgestone worked very well, especially after the second stint when there was more rubber down on the track. The hard Bridgestone did take longer to deliver its best lap time and we saw a number of illustrations of this as part of some interesting battles for position. Silverstone helped serve us an exciting fast race here today.”
