European GP 2009 - Ferrari Preview

Maranello, 18th August 2009

This enforced holiday came at just the right point in the season, given the calendar now presents us with two Grands Prix in ten days and also, it is that point of the year when work on the 2010 car is really moving forward, which means a very heavy workload for everyone concerned. However, the days following the Hungarian Grand Prix were busier than planned for the Press Office and senior management who had to deal with the repercussions of Felipe Massa’s accident in qualifying. The process of finding a replacement for the Brazilian was the main topic in the media, eventually leading to the appointment of Scuderia Ferrari Marlboro’s longstanding official test driver, Luca Badoer. This last weekend, team principal Stefano Domenicali made a lightning visit to Brazil, where he spent several hours with Felipe, whose recovery is going very well. He is very keen to get behind the wheel as soon as possible, while being fully aware, he has to be patient and let his recovery run its course. He and Domenicali recorded a special video message for everyone at the Gestione Sportiva, which was shown in the factory today (Tuesday.) On top of this, Kimi Raikkonen was still in the news, running at a very competitive pace in the World Championship Rally of Finland at the end of July and beginning of August. He enjoyed the experience.

With Badoer now part of the race line-up, he took part in two days of promotional filming on Monday and Tuesday at Fiorano, to provide footage of him in a racing environment. As permitted in the team testing agreement, the Italian completed no more than 100 kilometres per day at the wheel of the F60, fitted with demonstration tyres. The filming provided Luca with the chance to reacquaint himself with the car in which he had only completed a handful of kilometres so far this year. The factory shut-down meant that Badoer had not even been able to meet with the race engineers and that was another issue addressed over these past two days. He also spent time in the static simulator, to give him a general impression of the Valencia street circuit. “I am very motivated to make the most of this opportunity, even if I know I am facing a tough challenge, especially during the first couple of days in Valencia,” said Luca. “It will effectively be a test session for me, but I will be trying my best to secure a good result. I have to say, my first thoughts when I take to the track will be for Felipe, because I got a real fright when I saw his accident. I am delighted that he is making a good recovery and I hope he will be back racing as soon as possible. I have to add that I am also thinking of Michael, because having trained with him over the last few weeks, I know how much he wanted to make this comeback and how much effort he was putting into his preparation. Even though his decision has provided me with this great opportunity to race for the Scuderia, I feel sorry for him, because not only are we friends, but I am also an admirer of his. And finally, I repeat how grateful I am to Luca di Montezemolo and Stefano Domenicali for giving me the chance to make my childhood dream come true.”

All the teams have only a limited amount of data relating to the Valencia circuit, having raced there just once before and it is clearly unusual for a street circuit, because cars reach a higher speed and there are more run-off areas than venues such as Monaco and Singapore. Although the factory has been closed, the F60 will have some new parts, compared to its configuration when last seen in Budapest. As a result of aero work and testing carried out prior to the Hungarian Grand Prix, the car will roll out with modifications to the front and rear wings and the diffuser. Although any sort of technical work was banned during the break, it is not illegal for engineers and technicians to spend idle moments on their holiday thinking about the car and how to improve it. Indeed given their racing DNA, it’s hard to think of them doing otherwise! It is hoped that the aerodynamic updates and the result of this brainwork will see the momentum that resulted in Scuderia Ferrari Marlboro finishing on the podium in the last two races continue to produce results in the next few races. It is a tough task for the team, as there is only a limited amount of time to prepare for the European Grand Prix and then there is a very long drive and only four days to be ready to race again at Spa-Francorchamps. In fact, logistically, back-to-back races in Europe are actually harder to deal with than when races follow one another at the “flyaways” because of the extra work in setting up the transporters and motorhomes. However, it is the opposition on the track which provides the biggest challenge, as the two teams currently heading the classification are bound to be strong, while other teams have been showing signs of a renaissance in recent races. As established a few races ago, the Scuderia will be doing its all to hit its current target of finishing third in this year’s Constructors’ Championship.

Hungarian GP 2009 - Ferrari Race Press Release

Hungarian GP - Race

K. Raikkonen: 2° 1:38.35.405, + 11.529 70 laps, Chassis 279

Weather: air temperature 23 °C, track temperature 36 °C, sunny.

Third podium of the season for the Scuderia, with its only car on the grid today finishing second, with Kimi Raikkonen. This result sees Scuderia Ferrari Marlboro move up to third place in the Constructors’ classification.

Stefano Domenicali: “We dedicate this result to Felipe: at this time, all our thoughts are with him and his family and I think this sentiment also applies to those who are close to him and to fans all over the world. Kimi drove a great race and the team worked in impeccable fashion, concentrating on the job despite what happened yesterday. We got the best result we were capable of. Please allow me on behalf of everyone at Ferrari to send our best wishes to Felipe. We love you and we are all thinking of you.”

Kimi Raikkonen: “Today’s result is very important for the team in such a difficult weekend because of what happened to Felipe yesterday. I am pleased with second place, even if it is not completely satisfying as I always race to win. On this type of track, we are certainly closer to the best than at other circuits and today, honestly we were actually even closer than we had expected to be. I got a good start, ending up fourth after the first few corners. We knew it would be crucial to make up places at the start to be in with a chance of fighting for the podium. After the first pit stop we began to have problems with the right hand exhaust and so, at the second stop, the team asked to leave using a different procedure to usual. It lost me a bit of time but I still had a reasonable advantage over Webber so I could manage the situation. Today, the car wasn’t bad, but it was not quick enough to go for the win.”

Chris Dyer: “A super result on a difficult weekend for the whole team. Kimi drove a great race, starting with a really fantastic opening lap, followed by a very good second stint on the softer tyres. In between those phases, the team pulled off a great pit stop to put Kimi ahead of Webber. We were a bit worried about a problem with an exhaust and so we told the driver to be very careful at the second pit stop. We lost a bit of time and then in the final part, we had to deal with a fast closing Webber, who was very quick, but all the same, we managed to respond well enough to comfortably manage the situation to the finish.”

Hungarian GP 2009 - Bridgestone Sunday Press Release

26 July, Hungaroring, Hungary

Bridgestone Motorsport’s Hungarian Grand Prix Report

Reigning world champion Lewis Hamilton (Vodafone McLaren Mercedes) used a super soft – super soft - soft tyre strategy to score his first race win of the season after a thrilling and tactical Hungarian Grand Prix at the Hungaroring.

Hamilton finished over 11 seconds ahead of Scuderia Ferrari Marlboro driver Kimi Raikkonen who used the same tyre strategy to achieve his best finish of the season. Mark Webber (Red Bull Racing) used a super soft – soft – super soft strategy for his second third placed finish of the year.

Hiroshi Yasukawa – Director of Bridgestone Motorsport, says

“Congratulations to Lewis Hamilton and Vodafone McLaren Mercedes for taking their first win of the year. They have worked very hard for this result and it is good to see another winner this season. Well done to Ferrari too for their best result of the season with Kimi Raikkonen on what has been a very difficult weekend for everyone. Of course, our thoughts are with Felipe Massa who we wish a speedy recovery.”

Hirohide Hamashima - Bridgestone Director of Motorsport Tyre Development, says

“Lewis Hamilton and McLaren have shown that it is possible for a KERS car to win, even on a very slow circuit, which was a great achievement today. The track conditions continued to improve through the race and we saw Mark Webber set the fastest race lap five laps before the chequered flag. “It was interesting to see different tyre and fuel strategies through the field. Both Bridgestone tyres worked well. Some cars suffered from oversteer and we did see some rear tyre graining today, particularly on the super soft. Those who could manage this achieved good results. Overall, our tyre allocation was correct for this circuit. After what we have seen today I think we will see a very interesting end to the season after the summer break.”

Hungarian GP 2009 - Bridgestone Saturday Press Release

Hirohide Hamashima - Bridgestone Director of Motorsport Tyre Development

What was significant about today’s running?

“Firstly, we send our very best wishes to Felipe Massa. We hope he makes a quick recovery.

“Lap times were exceptionally close today and we saw an interesting battle through the qualifying sessions. There was plenty of suspense even after the sessions had ended. Congratulations to Fernando Alonso for his first pole since Monza in 2007. Starting first is a very big prize here, as overtaking is so difficult. I am very interested to see the starting weights of the cars as I think we will have a fascinating race.”

What are the tyre strategy considerations for tomorrow’s race?

“The track surface continues to improve here, even though there was very heavy rain last night, and this improvement allows both tyres to work far better than we saw on Friday. Our data suggests that the super soft Bridgestone could be the favoured race tyre for many. We didn’t see much running of the soft tyre in the afternoon today, but in the morning there were some driver comments that there was not as much grip from this tyre and the lap times are slower. This means that how to use the soft tyre is likely to be the key consideration for tomorrow’s race.”

Hungarian GP 2009 - Alonso Wins Surprise Pole

Alonso will start tomorrow’s Hungarian GP from Pole Position after an action packed Hungarian GP. The timing screens failed at the end of Q3 so we had to wait (along with the teams and drivers) to see what the final results were.

Sadly Massa had a very nasty accident at the end of Q2, when he was hit by debris from Rubens’ Brawn GP car. He will not be fit to race in Hungary and has successfully undergone surgery

German GP 2009 - Webber Wins At Last!

German GP 2009 - Webber Wins At Last!

We never did get that dramatic wet race we were promised. It seems yet again that was reserved for the GP2 Sprint Race! We did get however a new addition to the Grand Prix winners list as Mark Webber one the race in dominant form.

After 8 years of trying it wasn’t a surprise to hear his radio transmission after his crossed the line! It was refreshing to hear him so passionate and elated, although a lot of it was probably relief I’m sure.

The biggest surprise wasn’t that he won it but that he managed to cross the line P1 even after being handed a ridiculous driver through penalty by the stewards and without the help of rain. His team were ’stoked’ off course, especially as this was the second 1-2 in a row for Red Bull.

Vettel missed out on that home win his fans wanted so much but he did an awesome job to finish second and still take more points of championship leader Button. Brawn must be pretty worried now as Red Bull can beat them in the wet & dry. The only thing against Red Bull’s title hopes is that they have two very competitive drivers and are doing things fairly by not backing one horse this early on.

Massa and Rosberg had a great race and managed to beat the Brawns to third and fourth place, thanks to a pitstop refuelling error for Rubens and both cars struggling with their tyres towards the later stages of the race. Alonso too was on a charge in the late stages

Another bad day for Hamilton with his race effectively over by lap 1. He kept asking to retire and save the engine & gearbox but McLaren kept him out running last just in case the rain came but it didn’t.

It feels like deja vu writing this review as sadly it was yet another disappointing race result for our Kimster. And yet again another retirement. Kimi had another great start and with the heavier full loads the Ferrari’s were carrying it was looking promising for some solid points.

Unfortunately things went wrong as early as lap 14, when Kimi’s car was damaged by some debris effecting his pace and then this finally ended his race after a lose of  power.

Sadly that wasn’t all of Kimi’s bad luck for this race. It seems that the BBC F1 team are just as keen on bring up the Kimi/Sutil Monaco 08 accident up at every race possible as ITV-F1 were. Now even more so after Raikkonen and Sutil had a coming together as Sutil exited the pits. It was clearly a racing incident, with Adrian blaming himself more than Kimi, yet BBC commentary decided to bash Kimi and had him a ‘penalty’ for Hungary. Luckily the stewards decided not to after reviewing the incident after the GP.

We now look to the Hungarian GP. Its a circuit that should suit the Ferrari’s and Massa has shown they can beat the Brawns. So Kimi will be aiming for a podium. Lets hope lady luck is on his side this time.

German GP 2009 - Ferrari Race Day Press Release

Felipe Massa - 3rd: ”It’s been such a long time since I made it to the podium! I really wanted it after a very difficult first half of the season. Little bit little, we are improving and we will do all we can to get back to winning ways this season: I want to start hearing the Italian and Brazilian national anthems as soon as possible! A great start and the strategy were the keys to this result. In the first fifteen laps I was struggling to keep Vettel behind me, but than I think he too was also struggling a bit with the tyres. Maybe I could have managed to get one place higher, if we had brought the pit stop forward a bit, because I too was struggling with my tyres, but it’s easy to say these things with hindsight. Before the race however, I didn’t think I’d end up on the podium as a place in the top five already seemed a lot to ask. But then we saw that cars that in theory are quicker than us ended up behind us and so we realized we had a good chance. We have to continue in this direction.”

Kimi Raikkonen - DNF: ”Germany definitely doesn’t seem to bring me luck. I don’t know how many times a problem beyond my control has forced me to retire and this time it was down to debris. A shame, as I think I could have got a good result. The car was a bit difficult to drive at the start, but I think it was the same for everyone. Around lap 14, we began to see that something wasn’t right and we tried to manage the situation. Then I started to lose a lot of power and the team asked me to pit because there was nothing that could be done anymore. The incident with Sutil? These things happen in racing, we spoke to one another and I think that he also sees it that way, as indeed did the Stewards.”

Stefano Domenicali: ”It’s a nice feeling to be back on the podium and this result for Felipe is a good reward for all the effort put in by him in producing a perfect race and by all the team, at the track and in Maranello. A shame for Kimi who could have secured a good finish: it was really unlucky. Our aim, as we’ve already said is to finish third in the Constructors’ championship and today’s result has helped us make up some ground on the squad ahead of us. However, we have to work very hard to succeed, because this season is still very hard to interpret: once again this weekend we have seen an incredible see-sawing in performance between some of the teams compared to the previous race and within this Grand Prix itself. There are many variables, especially those linked to the behaviour of the tyres which does not seem to be completely under control: getting to grips with this could be very important for the rest of the championship.”

Chris Dyer: ”This podium from Felipe is a really great reward for the whole team, who did a great job this weekend and in preparing for this race. However, we are also very disappointed about what happened to Kimi, who could have brought home some important points. This result is a great motivation for the rest of the season. We must continue to work with the same intensity to get back to where we want to be. The choice to stick with the softer tyre for the second stint of the race was based on what we had seen in the first stint, where it’s true that Felipe had suffered a bit, while Kimi had no problems. We were also concerned about how the harder compound would work in these temperatures.”

German GP 2009 - Bridgestone Race Day Press Release

Red Bull Racing driver Mark Webber scored his first ever F1 race win after he used a two stop, super soft – medium – medium tyre strategy to win a fast-paced German Grand Prix in difficult conditions at Nurburgring.

Despite being given a drive-through penalty for causing an avoidable collision at the start, Webber finished 9.2 seconds ahead of team-mate Sebastian Vettel with Scuderia Ferrari Marlboro driver Felipe Massa taking third. Vettel used a super soft – medium – super soft strategy and Massa used a super soft – super soft - medium strategy for his first podium finish of the season.

Hirohide Hamashima - Bridgestone Director of Motorsport Tyre Development, says
“Congratulations to Mark Webber for taking his first ever Grand Prix win at the 130th attempt. This illustrates the Japanese proverb ‘continuing is the force’ and we are very happy that this win occurred using Bridgestone tyres. From a tyre analysis perspective this was a thrilling race. The conditions, such as temperature and track condition, meant that for most of the race it was very difficult to determine which was the better race tyre. This meant that drivers and strategists had to use a lot of brain power today and we saw a good variety of strategies through the field, even from drivers in the same team.

“The track conditions started very green and this caused some competitors who started on the super soft tyre problems with graining and degradation. Some competitors used the medium compound very well, and Fernando Alonso was notable with his fastest lap on this tyre, however others struggled for grip and temperature with this tyre. This all added to the interest.”
