Australian GP 2009 - Race Report
Jenson Button wins the first race in Brawn GP’s history, which is the Brits second of his F1 career. His team mate Rubens managed to finish second after a much more eventful race, which saw him have contact with many cars during the GP including Kimi Raikkonen. Kimi sadly appeared to throw away a chance for solid points or even a podium today as he and Ferrari ended the day scoring no points with both Ferrari’s retiring before the end of the race.
Vettel & Kubica’s great race also ended in tears with both drivers taking each other off fighting over second with just 3 laps to go. Lewis lucked in with a 4th place - which may still improve to a podium as McLaren contest Trulli’s position. All in all a weekend to forget as a Kimi fan but congratulations to Jenson for a much deserved victory. More to follow later…

What a first race for Brawn GP! They did a brilliant job (except Rubens, I’m still crossed with him) and it was great to see a completely different top three Shame about Kimi and Ferrari, it definitely wasn’t their weekend. Fingers crossed they can sort out all the problems and have a better weekend in Malaysia!

Nice one, Brawn GP! Finally, British fans remembered ol’ Jenson.
And Rubens was good too, sans the NASCAR move on Kimi.
I hate the fact that Kimi has no score this weekend. I hae the fact that he has the yellow thing on top of his car again. I hate the fact that Lewis got some major points after he started off badly (I swear he and Lady Luck, are like, that close).
Most of al, I hate the fact that Ferrari seems to have reliability issues this early on, and that Kimi seems to have just ruined the race on his own. (Can someone explain that spin?)
Here’s to Malaysia!

Grrrr! Kimi threw away a podium with less than ten laps to go!
And what is jammy Lewis doing in forth place after such a rotten start? That boy has all the luck!
But it was a really interesting race, and a great start to the season. Much more fun than the old redwash Schumi parades we used to have to watch. And I’m pleased to see the return of Brawn, I’ve missed him and his bananas! Not to mention the return of ‘the chain’ and NO ADVERTS during coverage now we’re back with the beeb. Yippee!!
Better luck next time, Kimster

About hitting wall, Kimi have admitted that is his fault.
Let’s hope Kimi will bring podium at Sepang, Malaysia.

great review jemela! i agree totally on all of your main points. well said and keep up the good work!
i’m not completely sure on my oz gp verdict. with the big twist on rules and regs this year i don’t think any of us will have a true grasp on it for a handfull more grand prix.
hats off to ross, jense, rubens, and the entire brawn gp team for their hard work and accomplishments of round one. it was a deserved victory for button and his team, and although it may not have appeared it i thought rubens fully deserved P2.
there’s no doubt that brawn gp had the best car but i don’t think they were light years ahead of everyone either. the brawn car did look a bit mortal, and bmw, red bull and williams seem poised for the chase.
as gutted as i was to see ferrari score no points, i don’t think tifosi should be chewing off all of their finger nails. kimi’s spin was awkward, and felipe is rarely good in albert park. i’m no chief engineer, but from my very outside perspective i don’t think ferrari should have ran KERS for oz. awfully big risk for a team that’s not any further behind (if not quicker already) than its “big team” rivals, and especially for a team that has had it’s share of technical hiccups and mechanical indigestion.
i’m not trying to take anything away from the accomplishments of the brawn squad, nor am i trying to take away from the intrigue of the new season. i do know, however, that had it not been for the drastic rules and regulations changes this wouldn’t be happening. let’s not forget this is formula 1. the top teams will figure all of this stuff out, and it will prove to end up being a multiple driver fight until the end.
i do hope the brawn team can stay competitive and fight for the title. i think the three big names that come to mind (Jenson, Rubens, and Ross) all equally deserve that. i don’t want them to run away with it because it would in fact take away from their accomplishments and give the general public more of a reason to poke fun at the sport.
there are so many teams that need to do well, but what it comes down to is results. the biggest loss for kimi fans is that lewis pulled it together with an average car and pulled in P3. call it luck, call it whatever you want. the other big boys didn’t do it. he is without a doubt a very talented driver who put himself in that spot.
sepang is the first chance for many of drivers to reclaim that early season form and make noise. the only problem is there are going to be a lot of people vying for that top three spot next sunday. good luck kimster.

Thanks kendall - its great to have some feedback on my reports as it takes a lot to get on and write them, esp. after a race like that! Thanks for your thoughts on it too - let me know if you ever fancy writing a little article for gokimi’s main site
