Kimi and his Citroën Junior Team look ahead to the second round of the 2010 WRC

2nd March 2010

Rally Mexico Preview - Citroën Junior Team set for Mexico debut

Following the wintery conditions of the Rally Sweden, the Citroën Junior Team now changes continent and surface to contest the first gravel round of the 2010 FIA World Rally Championship season. Sébastien Ogier/Julien Ingrassia and Kimi Räikkönen/Kaj Lindström will drive the team’s two Citroën C4 WRCs.

Having appeared on the World Rally Championship for the first time in 2004, the León-based event features the most concentrated rally route on the calendar this year. In fact, a full 354.60 kilometres out of a total route length of only 884.58 kilometres are run competitively. Another peculiarity of Rally Mexico is that competitors will be driving at an altitude of almost 2800 metres at one point on the opening day (Ortega, SS2 and SS6). Citroën comes into the event fresh from three consecutive victories in Mexico, between 2006 and 2008. Nonetheless, the Rally Mexico will be an all-new experience for the Citroën Junior Team, which goes there for the first time.

Since making their World Rally Championship debut two years ago, Sébastien and Julien have climbed onto the overall podium (thanks to second place in Greece last year) and finished eighth in the 2009 World Rally Championship for drivers. In Sweden, their fifth place ensured that they beat several local Scandinavian specialists. So in Mexico, the French duo’s objective will be to at least equal that result.

Kimi Räikkönen and Kaj Lindström will continue their learning curve on the gravel of Mexico. Following their first rally on the snowy tracks of Sweden in February, the Finnish crew now faces a new challenge on a very different surface.

“What I love about rallying is that you have to be competitive on all sorts of different surfaces,” said Kimi. “After my experience on snow, now I’m going to find out about driving on gravel. I really don’t know what to expect, but that is all part of our learning process. I’m very much looking to driving the Citroën C4 WRC in these challenging conditions and getting as many kilometres under my belt as I can, in order to add to my experience.”

Three questions to… Kimi Räikkönen

Looking back on it now, what conclusions can you draw from your first event in the World Rally Championship with the Citroën Junior Team C4 WRC?

“The really positive thing is that we managed to cover all the stages on the Rally Sweden and we learned a lot. We could have done better overall had it not been for some small mistakes but we managed to improve our stage times as the rally went on. That was our initial objective. The second run through the stages was better for us. I also felt a big difference once I became more confident with my pace notes. With more experience, things should get increasingly easier.”

Mexico will be the first time that you drive the Citroën C4 WRC on gravel. Do you think that you will find this surface easier than snow?

“I’m really looking forward to starting the Rally Mexico. My impression is that driving on gravel should be a little bit easier for us. Or at least that’s what Marcus Grönholm told me! I reckon that we will find a more consistent level of grip on gravel. But for the moment I’m still lacking experience. I just need to get more kilometres in the car in order to get used to the Citroën C4 WRC in particular and rallying in general.”

How are you going to approach the Rally Mexico?”

My plan had initially been to take part in a test session on gravel, in order to get to know the Citroën C4 WRC a bit better on a new surface for me. But unfortunately I experienced a bit of back pain that stopped me from driving. I’ve had some treatment now but I preferred to rest before leaving for Mexico. Of course I would have liked to test the car before going, but it was important to recuperate in order to start the second rally of the season in the best possible physical shape.”

After impressing over the first few days, Kimi sadly crashed out on the final stage of Saturday's running.

2nd August 2009

Kimi Raikkonen has crashed out of Rally Finland in the final stage on day two.

The Finn, who was making his debut in the World Rally Championship this weekend, had been running very well following an impressive performance on Friday, when he set eight top-20 stage times.

Having started the last day in 17th place overall, the Ferrari man was up to 15th post-SS18 and on course for a rostrum finish in Group N. However the 29.29 kilometre Vaarinmaja stage - the longest of the event - was to be his undoing when he rolled his Abarth Grande Punto S2000, crashing in the same place that caught out Adapta WRT’s Mads Ostberg.

Raikkonen and co-driver Kaj Lindstrom, who formerly partnered multiple world rally champion Tommi Makinen, were both uninjured in the incident.

Speaking prior to his exit, Raikkonen had been unhappy with his car as the engine was playing up. Despite that though he still managed to increase his pace and posted two 14th best efforts in SS17 and SS18.

“We cannot do anything about our engine problems,” said the Finn after the 12.75 kilometre Urria test, SS17. “The handling is okay now, but we don’t have enough power. It is a real shame, as it would have been nice to have had a little bit more speed.”

Meanwhile Patrik Flodin, who had been fighting with Raikkonen for 15th and P3 in the Production class - 15.1 seconds adrift, was disappointed to see the ‘iceman’ go out. “I saw Kimi’s car in the same place that Mads Ostberg went off and a lot of spectators were helping,” Flodin added. “It is a real shame that Kimi has gone off - it was a nice feeling to be rallying against him.”

Kimi was 20th fastest in his first ever WRC stage at Rally Finland.

31st July 2009

Ferrari’s Kimi Raikkonen was 20th in his World Rally Championship debut at Rally Finland on Thursday. Kimi successfully completed the opening super special stage of Rally Finland 2009 and was only 0.1 second behind his teammate Anton Alen, both are driving Abarth Punto S2000s. Raikkonen beat his opponent, Sveinung Bieltvedt, on the stage around the Killeri horse trotting track and set the 20th fastest time in the process.

Competing while F1 takes a monthlong break, Raikkonen, the 2007 world champion, was driving as a guest in Group N Fiat. He was the early leader on the 2km prologue on a horse trotting track, but dropped down the list as the more experienced rally drivers finished. World rally champion Sebastien Loeb of France won in 1 minute 20.3 seconds. Daniel Sordo of Spain, Loeb’s Citroen teammate, was second in 1:20.4 and Finnish Ford driver Mikko Hirvonen third in 1:21.2.

On Friday, there will be nine special stages totalling 131.28km.

In Kimi's official column, he looks back at the Hungarian GP, wishes Massa well and looks forward to his first WRC event in Finland.

Maranello, 29 July 2009

First of all I want to wish Felipe well again. He had an incredible accident on last Saturday and I think that he was on everybody’s mind in the Scuderia Ferrari and the drivers on the grid. I know that his condition is improving constantly and I’m glad to hear that. I really hope that he’ll be alright soon and get back on the track. It was an absurd accident and the Team had some very difficult moments, because in the beginning we didn’t know why Felipe ran off the track at this point. But then a driver has to blind out certain things once he’s on the track.

The second place on Sunday was a good result for the Scuderia, especially under these circumstances. We’ve made some progress, there’s not doubt. The high temperatures helped our car and I could press hard on the soft and on the hard compound. We managed to get a place on the podium, but we couldn’t really fight for victory. It’s strange how it always goes well on certain tracks and some are completely the opposite: in Germany things go always wrong for me, but in Hungary I drove on the podium again, for the fifth time.

With these eight points we gained here we’re now on the third place in the Constructors’ Championship. That’s where we want to stay, because this is the goal we set for ourselves for the second half of the season. Obviously we’re trying to gain another place on the podium, but we know that it’s difficult, because the competition at the top is really hard. I won’t give up also because I would like to win at least one race this year.

Now I can’t wait to race at the Finland Rally, although I’m going there to have fun. We had some very good tests with my Fiat Grande Punto Abarth S2000 and we’re ready for racing. I’ve got great experience in Formula 1 but not in rally driving, although I know a bit what it’s about. Getting used to a new track in Formula 1 is quite easy, but in a rally the stages always change. After this experience I’ll relax with my family and my friends. It’s high summer in Finland and it’s good to chill out a bit before we start with the preparations for the European GP at Valencia.

Kimi Raikkonen has taken part in Q&A session just a few hours before he takes part in his first WRC rally.

He seemed very relaxed and excited rather than feeling any pressure from taking part in first WRC event in his home country.

During the interview he discussed his aims and chances for the weekend which basically is “to stay on the road and remain hopeful…”

When asked whether he could see rallying as a future career, the Finn said: “Yes definitely. I am still in F1 and still have one more year contract but everything is open and it is nice to be a part of it here. I am a bit too young to do nothing so I will see. It all depends on which way F1 is going. Nobody is exactly sure how it will be. I am in no hurry.”

The next round of the FIA World Rally Championship will see former Formula 1 World Champion Kimi Raikkonen make his WRC debut at the Neste Oil Rally Finland (30 July - 2 August).

Kimi will be driving an Abarth Grande Punto, the car he has driven on previous rally outings but never in the WRC, and will see Kaj Lindström act as his co-driver for the rally in the home country of the Formula 1 ace.

Neste Oil Rally Finland has seen an unprecedented amount of interest in 2009 and has attracted a record number of entries - 90 registered crews - to sign up to the rally. That is the highest number so far in any WRC qualifying round this year and equals this season’s record for the number of World Rally Cars taking part.

There are 18 World Rally Cars amongst the entries and 25 different nationalities will be represented in Finland, the country widely regarded as the home of Rallying.

All the current Rally stars will be on show as the battle between championship rivals Mikko Hirvonen and Sebastian Loeb continues to heat up. A surprise addition for home fans is up-and-coming Finn Matti Rantanen, who has been nominated as a points-scoring driver for Munchi’s Ford WRT. Rantanen will be driving a Ford Focus WRC.

Simon Long, ISC CEO, said: “I’ve said before that the WRC is built on heroes and iconic figures - and they don’t come any bigger than Kimi Raikkonen. “It’s superb news for the Championship and hugely exciting that he’ll be competing at Rally Finland.”

Kimi looks ahead to this weekend's Turkish GP at Istanbul Park.

Maranello, 3rd June 2009

Ferrari always went very well at the Turkish GP over the last three years, but this time Brawn GP is the great favourite, because they won five out of the six races so far. We’re closing the gap, but we’ve got to give it our all to get back in the lead.

It was great to be back on the podium at Monaco. The Team pushed very hard and it was a very nice reward to have both cars amongst the first four. The Monaco weekend was a step forward as far as the result is concerned, but we have to be patient: I know that our fans want to see us winning immediately, but we have to be realistic. We’re closer, that’s for sure, and we’ll have some updates in Turkey; but we know that the others work hard too. Compared to the Monaco track the Istanbul Park is a more conventional track and we have a more definite idea. I really like this track and it’s very demanding. There are all types of corners and blind spots to brake; everything you need for a beautiful race. This year’s cars have less downforce, but we’re using slicks: corner number 8 will be very exciting under these circumstances. I think that it’s the downforce we still have to make up ground compared to Brawn GP and Red Bull, but we’re heading in the right direction.

Now, almost half way through the season, I’m much more optimistic than I was at the start, especially with the steps we’ve taken in the last two races. We know that there are further improvements coming up, which makes me think positive about the future. Who wins five out of four races at the start of the season is in an excellent position to winning the title, but the Championship isn’t over yet. Everything can happen, although things have to change very soon.

Last Saturday I made my first experience in a rally on tarmac in Italy. I had lots of fun as far as the competition and the Italian fans’ support were concerned. It was a pity that the fun it didn’t last long.

Kimi Raikkonen at the weekend crashed out of his latest outing in the world of professional rallying. However the Finn looks set to take part in more rallies this year.

Kimi Raikkonen’s affair with the world of professional rallying is not over for this year, his co-driver has revealed.

After two outings in the winter, the Ferrari driver crashed out of his latest foray last weekend in the Rally della Marca, again at the wheel of his own Fiat Abarthe Grande Punto.

But Kaj Lindstrom, who also famously sat alongside multiple world rally champion Tommi Makinen’s career, told wrc.com that the 29-year-old Finn’s impact with a stone wall was triggered by a handling problem due to a broken differential.

“Looking forward, yeah, there is a plan,” he revealed. “I’d say it’s most likely he will do more rallies this year.”

Kimi looks back at the Monaco GP in his official column.

I wasn’t too happy with the third place at the Monaco GP. For sure it was the best result in the last time, but that was nothing new to me and we knew that we could arrive on a place on the top. When the leaders in the Championship are so far ahead in the classification, in the end it’s only a victory that counts. Being back on the podium is a nice reward for the whole Team.

The hard work of the last weeks finally bears some fruit, which is really positive for all of us. We know that we’re on the right way now: there are still some minor things to be done but sooner or later we will win. We’ll show up with further improvements of the F60 in the upcoming races and we hope we can then challenge the leaders even more, in the qualifying and in the race.

The Monaco qualifying is so much more important than on other tracks and we’ve almost done a perfect job: we missed the pole by 25 thousandsth of a second. Not starting from the first position means that it’s very likely you won’t win. Furthermore the second position on the grid doesn’t help on this track. You start from the dirty side of the track and whenever I found myself in this position I always lost at least one position in the field, because the tyres spin a lot at the start. In fact Rubens overtook me, which was really a shame. If I had managed to stay beind Button I think I could have easily opened a gap. In the end it was difficult to fight for second position and then there was this story at the last pit stop, where we lost a couple of seconds, due to a problem with the right rear wheel. When I took up the race again I was further behind the Brazilian than before.

We brought home both cars and gained some important points. There were many things at Monaco we can be satisfied with.

I’ll race in a rally in Italy next Saturday, in the Marca Trevigiana, and I want to thank the Scuderia that they gave me the possibility to take part in such a competition. I really enjoy myself and it will be my first experience on the tarmac after some tests on snow last winter. As I’m coming from the race track it will be interesting to see what I will be able to do behind the wheel of the Fiat Grande Punto S2000 on the roads close to Treviso.
